The Kazbegi Line

Khevi 3 days from €360 per person / day

Three days up the Georgian Military Highway, the road the Russian empire cut through the Caucasus in 1799 and the only one that crosses the range here. It ends under a 5,047 m volcano with a fourteenth-century church on the ridge in front of it.

  • Ananuri above the reservoir at first light
  • Gergeti Trinity walked up, not driven up
  • Truso valley: travertine, mineral springs, empty road

Day by day

  1. Day 01

    Up the road

Ananuri at first light, before the light turns flat on the reservoir. Lunch in Pasanauri where the two Aragvi rivers meet and do not mix. Gudauri, the arch, and Stepantsminda by four with the mountain out.

  2. Day 02

    Gergeti

Up on foot: two hours through the birch, 400 m of climb, and the church appears when you have stopped expecting it. By 4x4 if you would rather - no one is proving anything. Afternoon in the Sno valley, where nobody goes.

  3. Day 03

    Truso, then down

A valley of travertine terraces, mineral springs running orange, a Soviet-abandoned village and a road with nothing on it. Back to Tbilisi in the afternoon, at your speed.
